Training course for expatriates living in Portugal

The advantages of learning Portuguese

Not only is the arrival in a foreign country, social and professional integration in that country an exciting moment, it can also represent a very difficult process. The knowledge of a language is a pivotal element for the success of any relocation. More than simply learning how to communicate, learning a foreign language means learning about a culture. With this is mind, AFB has developed AFB EXPAT, a program designed for teaching Portuguese to expatriates and their families.

These courses are designed for

quad_amarelo.pngProfessionals  -  so that they may acquire the necessary skills in order to interact in a social and Professional context, i.e., to become proficient in Portuguese and in the necessary communicative skills for the entrepreneurial world.

quad_azul.pngSpouses - so that they may quickly and efficiently develop the more practical and idiomatic use of the Portuguese language in order to use it in common day-to-day situations and interact socially with native speakers.

quad_ver.pngChildren / Teens - our courses are aimed at providing them with the necessary support in learning Portuguese and other foreign languages.

Our courses

Our course levels are pursuant to the European Common Framework of Reference  for Languages (A1 to C2). Our general course programs are developed and enriched with other contents that are customized to meet the specific needs and expectations of each student.

Rhythm

Because we know that the initial phase of learning of language is vital for the success of the learning process, we propose private one-to-one classes for our students based essentially on catering to their individual aims and interests based on the following course structures:

quad_amarelo.pngFull immersion courses (5 days a week, 7 hours per day, which includes outdoor training as a way of providing students with authentic communicative situations with other native speakers of the language)

quad_azul.pngIntensive Courses (3 to 5 weekly sessions, 2 hours per day)

quad_ver.pngRegular courses (2 weekly sessions)

Classes may be held at the client’s office, home or at the AFB office in Lisbon.

For students with a busy agenda who cannot compromise with regular and fixed timetables, classes may be booked according to their weekly availability.

Customised Training

Time is precious for everyone and for that reason, at AFB we want our students to learn exactly what they need and want. In order to correspond to all of our students’ expectations, we have developed different training solutions for different learning styles:

quad_amarelo.pngClassroom learning: classes with a teacher that allow students to develop their communicative skills.

quad_azul.pngBlended Learning Lessons: classes with a teacher + online lessons that allow students to learn at their own pace thanks to the AFB e-learning platform with interactive and self-instructive exercises.

quad_ver.pngTelephoning Lessons: customized and structured lessons by telephone that allow students to learn what they need by practicing language using a real medium.

quad_verde.pngExam preparation courses: tailoured courses for those who wish to obtain a Portuguese proficiency certificate (CIPLE, DEPLE, DIPLE, DAPLE, DUPLE).

Certificates and diplomas are issued by the Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira of the Faculdade de Letras of the University of Lisbon (CAPLE).

Candidates will be tested on Reading Comprehension, Writing, Speaking and Listening Skills.

quad_amarelo.pngCultural programs: walks and guided visits with the aim of learning about Portuguese history and culture.

quad_azul.pngConversation workshops: conversation sessions, one-to-one or in small groups centered around current events and specific topics as a means of developing oral skills.

Expatriate Satisfaction Statement

Three words to explain my admiration for the AFB Línguas method: simple, and for that reason, extremely efficient.

Simple because right after my arrival in Lisbon, I spent two full weeks in an immersion course learning the « music » of Portuguese with three teachers  on a daily basis : one in the morning, one in the afternoon and another at lunch time. Not to mention dinner twice a week! Then, for the following three months we would meet twice a week for 90 minutes until we went on to meet on a more regular basis for following up and consolidating all the skills I had acquired.

It is simple because it’s all about teaching with traditional methods and learning verbs, verb tenses, grammar and vocabulary that is customised to our professional context and which we are asked to used frequently and quickly. This personalized feature of the course allows us to understand and express ourselves in our jobs from the first month on, considering that we learn the vocabulary that is specific to our company.

All the teacher’s work consisted on adapting grammar examples to the specific terminology of the bank I work for. Simple, but undoubtedly efficient.

It would be unfair not to mention that in order to make things easier for the student, the teacher plays an important role in preparing the course. This allows me to say that like any good CEO, Anne-France Beaufils complicated her personal life to make her clients’ lives easier.

And it works!
